fifteen zero three nineteenth of january two thousand sixteen is a poignant depiction of Carolina Sinisalo, a working-class Swedish woman who was politicised when her two sons were shot in a random act of gun violence on the outskirts of Stockholm. This experience motivated her to begin campaigning with other women against gun violence. Set primarily inside Carolina’s apartment, the film focuses on her daily routine in the aftermath of the shooting, which left her son Robin dead, and her surviving son Alejandro paralysed. The film depicts the home as a space of both mourning and resistance. Close cropping is used to emphasise the materiality of a series of everyday scenes, which are repeated throughout the film. These ordinary household images echo scenes from Chantal Akerman’s 1975 film Jeanne Dielman, which similarly depicts a well-rehearsed routine repeated over a particular period of time. As with the titular character of Akerman’s film, Carolina’s actions are carefully performed, emphasising the ritualistic nature of her life. Many of the images read as traces of her absent children, none of whom are depicted. Over the course of the film, it becomes clear that these ordinary gestures and household objects have been completely transformed in light of the shooting.
